Did you know that Bird Rock Coffee Roasters now has 3 coffee shops where you can enjoy their award winning coffee? Their first coffee shop opened in the Bird Rock neighborhood of La Jolla in 2006, with the Little Italy shop following last year. To my delight their 3rd location is more of a roaster with a small seating area. For folks like me who love the smell of roasting coffee this means I get the double pleasure of drinking & smelling their coffee as it roasts. This location also has more of an industrial look, which I appreciate. It’s somewhat like a lab, too. When I was there they were experimenting with a new Kyoto cold press coffee (not available for sale, yet). Currently this location is only open Mon.-Fri. from 6:00am to noon, but check their website in case they change their hours. There was plenty of free street parking when I stopped by around 9:00.
Fresh is an important word at Bird Rock Roasters. All coffee bags are labeled with the date they were roasted. And buying from the farmer matters, too. See their Farm-to-Cup video clip at http://birdrockcoffee.com/farm-cup/. So why should I care…coffee is coffee, right? Well, according to these coffee experts, Bird Rock Roasters is more than just coffee:
2012: named Micro Roaster of the Year per Roast Magazine
2013: one of the top 30 coffee roasters of the year per Coffee Review
2014: two of the top 10 coffees of the year per Coffee Review (www.coffeereview.com)
Just announced: Good Food Award for coffee (www.goodfoodawards.org/coffee/), including Geisha coffee, perhaps the best coffee in the country…certainly the most expensive at $11 a cup.
Check out their website for award updates & more. For example, here is a film on how to do a pour-over: http://birdrockcoffee.com/about/brewing/. Cupping is done at their La Jolla location on Fridays at 10:30am (reservations required & they fill fast: http://birdrockcoffee.com/about/roasting-cupping/). The La Jolla & Little Italy locations offer acoustic music from time to time (see http://birdrockcoffee.com/acoustic-music-series/). If you prefer coffee in your beer (or beer in your coffee), Karl Strauss Brewing Company & St. Archer Brewery are using Bird Rock beans for their coffee beer. Cheers!
