Football has nothing to do with coffee, so why is there a “Steelers” sticker on the roaster at Ryan Brothers? Being from Pittsburgh the Ryan brothers have Steeler loyalty, but they’ve been roasting outstanding coffee in San Diego for the past 20 years with Charger loyalty, too. My personal favorite is their strong Cowboy Coffee, but they roast enough coffee options for just about every taste. I also love their old brick building at Cesar Chavez Parkway & Main Street in Barrio Logan. This urbanite loves the city feel that old bricks give, so pull up a chair & relish your coffee in this classic city setting. And because they roast their coffee onsite, you’ll also have the smell of fresh coffee roasting to enjoy.
You may wonder why there’s a “Jesse James sat here” sign on the wall. If I answered that question you might not head there yourself, so I’ll leave it a mystery for you to solve. It will be worth the trip. They open at 5:00am for you early birds, but don’t go after 5:00pm weekdays or after 4:00pm weekends as they’ll be closed.
While you’re in the neighborhood, check out the nearby Chicano Park murals (cross Cesar Chavez Pkwy & walk behind Northgate Gonzalez market, see www.chicanoparksandiego.com/ for more information).
Ryan Brothers coffee is also in San Marcos at 133 N. Twin Oaks Valley Road, Terminal 2 baggage claim area at San Diego’s airport, and Petco Park (where I understand some of the coffees are spiked).
